ExpeditionsCarrier Operations
Expeditions are the artery connecting colony and galaxy: the officially stated purpose is to "gather resources, recruit new citizens, and trade with wandering merchants" — every expedition is one roguelite run and the colony's lifeline for expansion.
How Expeditions Work
From hands-on press coverage:
- You pilot a Carrier across the space map, choosing your own destination
- Each expedition can set an Aggression Level — deciding how aggressively you pick fights
- You pass various nodes along the way; the deeper you push into the sector, the stronger the enemies and the richer the rewards
- The ultimate goal of an expedition is to push to the end of the sector and fight a large-scale decisive battle (see Elysia Oasis Decisive Battle)
Node Types
| Node | Contents |
|---|---|
| Resource nodes | Harvest the various resources the colony needs |
| Merchant nodes | Trade supplies and goods with Wandering Merchants |
| Space stations | Interactable space facilities |
| Planets | Landable, explorable worlds (press compared the feel of exploring them to "a lighter No Man's Sky") |
| Combat zones | Assorted combat missions: annihilation, assault, recon, escort, luring |
Risk vs Reward
The core tension of the expedition system is a greed-punishment mechanic. The rule of thumb from press hands-on: "Push too deep and you lose part of your gains; turn back too early and you miss the valuable loot."
- Enemy strength scales with how deep you go
- The Core Fragments collected on an expedition only last for that run — but they are exactly what lets you snowball and push ever deeper
- Guide consensus: establishing "repeatable short expedition routes" that steadily feed the colony beats all-in deep runs in the early game
① Weapon Cores that match your current weapon; ② materials your production lines actually consume; ③ leave every other shiny trinket — it will only clog your limited storage. See the Beginner's Guide.
The Expedition–Colony Loop
Expeditions are not an isolated mode but the other half of the economic loop:
- Expeditions → Colony: bring back resources, core experience and prisoners (prisoners are converted into citizens/soldiers — see Prisoners & Conversion)
- Colony → Expeditions: factories produce weapons and armor, barracks provide troops, research unlocks skills — colony strength directly decides how far an expedition can go
Press framing of galaxy exploration also sets the right expectations: this is a space map that serves progression, not a free sandbox — "don't expect No Man's Sky- or Starfield-style free exploration."
